Starting an EV charging station in India can feel confusing because people mix up two things: setting up a charger inside a private space, and setting up a public charging point where anyone can charge.
Step 1 — Decide what kind of charging business you're building

Step 2 — Choose the site
This is where most success or failure happens. A decent charger at a great site usually beats a premium charger at a weak site.

- Some "waiting value" nearby (shops, cafe, office lobby)
- Clear visibility or easy Google Maps discoverability
- Electricity availability and a realistic path to upgrade if needed
Step 3 — Check power availability and load
Power is the most common reason projects get delayed. Ask these early:
- What connection already exists at the site?
- Is the sanctioned load enough, or will you need load enhancement?
- Where will the panel be, and what is the cabling route?
- Is the wiring distance reasonable (long runs add cost)?
Step 4 — Decide AC vs DC
If cars park for hours (society/office/hotel), AC usually works. If users expect quick top-ups (highway/busy hub), DC makes more sense — but costs more.
A common beginner mistake is buying fast charging because it sounds premium, and then realising the location doesn't generate enough usage to justify the investment.
Step 5 — Finalise vendor + service support
Customers don't care which brand you installed if it's offline when they arrive.
- Who provides on-ground service in your city?
- Typical response time?
- What's included in warranty and AMC?
- How are payment issues and refunds handled?
- Do you get a dashboard to monitor usage?
Step 6 — Get approvals and paperwork in place
- Site owner agreement (rent or revenue share)
- Electricity connection / load enhancement if required
- Safety work (earthing, breakers, proper cabling)
- Property-level compliance if it's a mall or fuel station site
Step 7 — Installation + site readiness
- Clear parking markings (so bays don't get blocked)
- Visible signage
- Weather protection if possible
- Clean cable routing (no confusion, no trip hazards)
Step 8 — Go live and make it discoverable
- Ensure your station shows up correctly on maps and apps
- Put simple on-site instructions and a helpline number
- Keep a contact number active for the first few weeks
